Choosing Between IOP & PHP

Both IOP and PHP are frequently seen as next steps after medical detox. These programs exist to help encourage and support people throughout their recovery journeys. The key difference between them is time commitment. A typical PHP schedule includes five sessions per week, with programming lasting around five to eight hours. It is designed to act as a full-time program. By contrast, IOP can be anywhere from three to five days a week and only three to four hours per session. These sessions are often scheduled in either the morning or the afternoon. Choosing the right program depends on a variety of factors. In some cases, people start with PHP and transition into an IOP schedule.

Virtual vs In-Person IOP in New Hampshire

Our goal is to make treatment and therapy as accessible as possible to the people who need it. For this reason, we also provide virtual IOP options. While IOP is already a more flexible scheduling alternative to PHP, virtual IOP provides even greater flexibility. In order for virtual IOP to be effective, individuals need to have a place where they can consistently join online video sessions with our team, and where they are supported by family or friends. Virtual IOP is often preferred by people who have concerns about commuting or need additional flexibility. 

What Happens During IOP?

IOP sessions are shorter than PHP sessions, but include very similar programming. Within IOP, people receive proven therapeutic techniques including both CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy) and DBT (Dialectical Behavior Therapy). This is combined with group or solo therapy as well as providing support and resources that help individuals along their recovery journeys.

What Housing Options Are There for IOP?

For both PHP and IOP, people will need to find housing if they do not live near the facility or do not want to go home due to potential triggers or other issues. With flexible hours and fewer sessions each week, it is great for parents or people who have responsibilities with either work or school. It can help people looking for addiction treatment, as well as people who have a dual diagnosis. IOP is specifically valuable for people who are transitioning from more structured treatment plans to returning to their regular day-to-day lives. 

How Long Do People Do IOP?

IOP can last two to three months, but the treatment plan is usually tailored to the individual. Oftentimes, people choose IOP because of the flexible schedule, and the flexibility can also extend to how long they do IOP. The most important thing is that at every stage of recovery, people have support and the treatments they need to progress to the next stage safely.
