What Are The Differences Between IOP & PHP?
While both IOP and PHP are structured programs, IOP is less intensive than partial hospitalization programs. This gives people more freedom and flexibility for work, parenting, school, or other day-to-day responsibilities. Of course, PHP may be better suited for someone who needs more structure. On average, a partial hospitalization program involves 4-6 hours of programming per day, five days a week. By contrast, an intensive outpatient program involves meeting for three hours a day, three or four days a week. In both cases, the programs are designed for patients who have completed detox and need outpatient care and support. Their primary goals revolve around building recovery skills, getting support, and integrating those skills back into daily life.
Who Is a Good Fit for PHP Addiction Treatment?
Partial hospitalization programs are often a step in the recovery process where an individual needs support but doesn’t need 24/7 supervision. PHP is designed to help people who need structure and may be struggling with some acute symptoms as they continue their recovery journey. The high level of structure helps ensure that people get both the counseling and education they need to feel comfortable and build confidence in their own relapse prevention skills. For people who are looking to balance their recovery treatments with personal responsibilities like work or family, IOP may be a better fit. IOP allows people to come in at flexible morning or evening sessions. If you have questions about which program would be a better fit, our team would be happy to discuss the details of the programs in greater detail.
What Can You Expect During PHP?
PHP is built around structure. A typical Partial hospitalization program is going to occur during daytime hours, Monday-Friday. Most PHP programming includes group therapy, individual counseling, treatment planning, education, and skill building. Over time, your progress is reviewed, and your support team will help you plan the next steps. For example, some people in PHP shift to IOP, decreasing the number of days and hours they spend with our team each week as they integrate the skills they have gained into their lives.
How Does Housing Work During PHP?
IOP and PHP do not typically include housing. People in these programs participate in therapy during daytime hours and have a few options for housing. Some people return to their own homes or stay with family. For many people dealing with addiction, it may not be healthy or safe to return home. Others work with sober living, transitional housing, or stay-at-facility-partnered housing. Here at Mountain View Retreat, we help our clients with facility-partnered housing options, which makes it easier for people to go to their programs.
What Issues Can PHP Help With?
Partial Hospitalization Programs are designed to help with a range of different issues. These can include addiction treatment, as well as dual diagnosis. PHP is especially valuable for people who need additional structure, which is often true for people who are managing a combination of mental health challenges and addiction treatment simultaneously. Within a partial hospitalization program, you will have the support and structure you need to navigate both mental health and addiction recovery with a team that is specifically equipped to work with you.

How Long Do People Do PHP?
On average, people attend PHP for two to six weeks, but the exact duration varies based on the individual needs of a client. These programs require people to come in five days each week and spend most of their daytime hours at the facility. Of course, a recovery journey does not end when a treatment stage ends. For this reason, our team works with everyone in PHP/IOP to develop plans and next steps, and ensure people have the resources they need to safely and securely return to their day-to-day lives.
