Substance Use Disorder Symptoms & Treatment in Marlborough, NH
Substance Use Disorder (SUD) is also frequently referred to as “drug addiction”. It is a mental health condition where an individual has a problematic pattern of substance use that impacts their day-to-day life, relationships, work, and quality of life. SUD is often impacted by how the brain releases dopamine and other important chemical messengers. A substance causes the brain to release these chemicals, which causes someone to feel good, but over time receptors are weakened, requiring more and more of the substance or other substances. SUD can be a spectrum from mild to severe addiction, and recognizing the signs is vital to getting help or helping a loved one get help. The common signs of substance use disorder include spending a lot of time using the substance or recovering from its effects, having issues with work or school responsibilities due to a substance, using the substance repeatedly even when it endangers you, developing a tolerance to that substance, or experiencing withdrawal symptoms when abstaining from use.

Substance Use Disorder & Withdrawal
In many cases, addiction to a substance can lead to withdrawal. Withdrawal includes short-term symptoms that an individual experiences when they stop using a substance. This can include vomiting and nausea, diarrhea, difficulty sleeping, muscle cramps, and mood changes. For this reason, the first step in substance use disorder treatment is often withdrawal management. This is sometimes done with medically supervised detox. While we do not provide detox at our facility, we can act as a resource to help recommend local options. After detox, treatment often includes therapy.
Drug Addiction & Treatment Options Available in New Hampshire
There are many different therapeutic options that help individuals treat SUD. For example, dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) is a type of talk therapy that focuses on managing intense emotions and equipping an individual with tools to understand how their actions are impacted by their thoughts. Cognitive behavioral therapy is a talk therapy that focuses on identifying patterns of behavior and their causes, and developing coping strategies. Here at Mountain View Retreat, we provide these therapies as well as other treatment options within the context of PHP and IOP programming.
Dual Diagnosis: Mental Health & Substance Use Disorder
Oftentimes, substance use disorder is linked to other mental health diagnoses. Dual diagnosis refers to a combination of a mental health issue, including PTSD or depression, alongside a substance abuse issue, including addiction to a specific drug or alcohol. Our team helps people with dual-diagnosis navigate their treatment needs by ensuring that care is individualized to each of our clients.
